Frequently Asked Questions
A degenerative eye condition related to aging, a cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens. Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes and results in blurry vision. A cure for cataracts involves the removal of the cataract from the eye through cataract removal surgery.
For more information about cataracts, visit The National Eye Institute’s website.
Glaucoma is a group of diseases, resulting from increased intraocular pressure, that can damage the eye's optic nerve and result in vision loss or blindness. While there is no cure for glaucoma, the degenerative process can be dramatically slowed with early treatment.
For more information about glaucoma, visit The National Eye Institute’s website.
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occurs when light entering the eye focuses behind the retina, instead of directly on it. People with hyperopia can see distant objects very well but have difficulty seeing objects that are up close.
Vision correction for hyperopia is available. Refractive surgery is an option for adults who wish to see clearly without glasses. LASIK, CK, Clear Lens Extraction and Replacement (CLEAR™), LTK, and intraocular contact lenses (ICL) are all options available to correct hyperopia.
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is an eye disease that gradually destroys central vision and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness. In some cases, macular degeneration advances slowly (some people may not even notice a change in their vision) while in others it progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in both eyes.
For more information about macular degeneration, visit The National Eye Institute’s website.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a vision problem experienced by up to one-third of the population. Nearsighted people have difficulty seeing objects at a distance, but can see up-close.
Nearsightedness may be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. Vision correction options include LASIK and PRK.
Presbyopia is a naturally occurring degenerative eye disorder associated with old age. During middle age, usually beginning in the 40s, people experience blurred vision at near points, such as when reading, sewing or working at the computer. Currently an estimated 90 million people in the United States either have presbyopia or will develop it by 2014.
Presbyopia can be corrected with refractive surgery, such as conductive keratoplasty (CK) or LASIK.
After LASIK surgery, go home and rest. Most patients return to work and normal activities the next day. Many patients do notice an immediate improvement in their vision, but it usually takes several weeks for the eyes to adjust to the final level of treatment.
Yes. This allows the patient to recover clear vision simultaneously and avoid the stress of two operations. However, the patient is free to make his own decision.
Both eyes can be corrected in just 15 minutes using LASIK. The laser treatment is performed usually in less than a minute, but the entire procedure takes a little longer.
Anyone with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, keratoconus, herpes simplex of the cornea, AIDS, or autoimmune diseases is not a candidate for LASIK. Also women who are pregnant may not be good candidates.
